Healing for the Woman With The Issue of Blood

The story of the Woman with the Issue of Blood is reported three times in the Gospels. Below are those three from different translations of the Bible:

King James Bible (KJV):

20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:

21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.

22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
Matthew 9:20-22 (KJV)

New International Version (NIV)

24 So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.

25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.

26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.

27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,

28 because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed."

29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.

30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"

31 "You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?' "

32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.

33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.

34 He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."
Mark 5:24-34 NIV

New Living Translation (NLT):

43 A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding, and she could find no cure.

44 Coming up behind Jesus, she touched the fringe of his robe. Immediately, the bleeding stopped.

45 "Who touched me?" Jesus asked. Everyone denied it, and Peter said, "Master, this whole crowd is pressing up against you."

46 But Jesus said, "Someone deliberately touched me, for I felt healing power go out from me."

47 When the woman realized that she could not stay hidden, she began to tremble and fell to her knees in front of him. The whole crowd heard her explain why she had touched him and that she had been immediately healed.

48 "Daughter," he said to her, "your faith has made you well. Go in peace." Luke 8:43-48 NLT

The woman with the Issue of Blood had been bleeding non-stop for 12 years. There was no end in sight. Even the doctors, after they took all her money, had given up on her. There was no known remedy for her condition. She had to stay inside her home, secluded and away from others. She couldn't work and she shouldn't go to the temple. Her situation was hopeless. But then one day she heard that Jesus was coming to town and all of a sudden she had hope.

She had heard of how He had healed others of many diseases. She believed that if she could just get to Him that she too would be healed. As she approached the crowd, she kept saying to herself, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed."

She had put all her faith in Jesus' healing power and somehow, even though she was crawling on the ground, she managed to get in real close to where He was passing by.

The dust from the crowd kept hitting her in the face as Jesus got closer to where she was. Then she reached out as far as she could. Her arm extended out from her body and miraculously her hand grabbed hold of the hem of His garment. She felt the healing power shoot through her body. The blood instantly dried up. She knew she was healed. At last, she was free!

Jesus turned, looked and asked, "Who grabbed hold of me and isn't letting go?"

To the disciples it seemed that Jesus was asking, "Who touched me?" They answered Jesus in such a way as to say, "With all these people around who are pressing in on you and us. How are we to know who touched you? They are all reaching out for you."

But Jesus knew that her touch was different from the rest. Scripture tells us that:

30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. Mark 5:30 NIV

Jesus said:

46 "Someone deliberately touched me, for I felt healing power go out from me." Luke 8:46 NLT

The key phrase is: "Someone deliberately touched me ..."

The woman's touch was not a casual touch. It was not a touch of someone trying to grab onto a movie star or a famous ball player. It was a touch of faith.

We can look at the original text that the Gospels were written in and see the Greek word used by the authors. The original Greek word, which was translated to the English word touch, is haptomai, which generally means to fasten oneself to, to adhere to, to cling to. In classical Greek, haptomai means to lay hold of, to hold fast, to appropriate.

So in the natural the woman had just managed to lightly touch Jesus' garment. But in the spirit she had grabbed on with all her might and she wasn't letting go.

Jesus knew this.

There is another interesting point about that encounter. Look at Jesus' response again:

30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. Mark 5:30 NIV

He said:

46"Someone deliberately touched me, for I felt healing power go out from me." Luke 8:46 NLT

Notice that the healing power came out of Jesus without Him having to do anything to the woman. He just made Himself available to her. In fact, according to the story, He was on His way to the house of Jairus, a synagogue leader, to heal his daughter. Jesus did not go to the woman to touch her as He had done with others. The woman came to Him and touched (or grabbed hold of) Him.

Why is that important? Because it means that the healing power was there with Jesus. All she had to do was reach out and lay hold of it herself - to receive her healing. We see this happened elsewhere to others in Matthew 14:36, Mark 3:10, Mark 6:56 and Luke 6:19.

Jesus told her

"...thy faith hath made thee whole ..." Matthew 9:20-22 (KJV)
"Daughter, your faith has healed you ..." Mark 5:24-34 (NIV)
" ... your faith has made you well ... " Luke 8:43-48 NLT

It was her faith that activated the healing power that Jesus had made available to her. If she did not exercise faith then she would not have received her healing.

However, the healing power was there whether she grabbed hold of it - or not.

Are you trusting God for your healing?

Are you less than completely believing at this point? If so, then remember that:

... faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God ..." Romans 10:17 (KJV)

The Word of God is medicine to our souls and our spirit. It can also be medicine to our body.
